5G-TOURS

Smart mobility, media and e-health for tourists and citizens

The project, funded by the Horizon2020 research and innovation programme, aims to test and use 5G technologies to provide useful, efficient and reliable services to citizens and tourists. In particular, 13 case studies are developed and tested in three different cities and in three different contexts: Rennes, in France, where the field of application is health and hospital; Athens, where applications in the field of mobility are tested; Turin, where the chosen field is tourism and culture. The tested services will be adapted to the needs of each individual case study. The ambition is to test pre-commercial 5G technologies in different domains and on a large scale, to demonstrate the full capability of the 5G network to support and respond to different needs over the same infrastructure. At the end of testing, the evaluation of each use case will cover several levels, from technical performance to economic impact and user satisfaction, in order to analyse its effectiveness and feasibility and to ensure replicability.

The project in Torino

Turin hosts 5 use cases testing applications related to the 5G network in museums and tourism in collaboration with Fondazione Torino Musei. The locations of the experiments are Palazzo Madama and GAM and the aim is to develop applications and services that can improve the visitor experience by offering more information and content, including through virtual and augmented reality. In addition, the project wants to develop approaches aimed in particular at young people and students to offer new educational activities through gamification. Other applications of particular relevance to museums include the use of robots to ensure the safety of visitors and the safeguarding of works of art in exhibitions. The 5G network plays a key role in these contexts, as it enables the transmission of data with significantly higher speed and accuracy than previous generations of networks.

Pratical steps

The main aim of the project is to develop applications based on the 5G network that could be of commercial interest and thus enter the market of digital services, focusing on tourism and museums in Turin, health in Rennes and mobility in Athens. Among the actions tested in Turin is the development of an app that will offer digital content and tourist information to visitors to Palazzo Madama, and the possibility of participating in an interactive game that will allow them to get to know some of the works in Palazzo Madama and GAM in a completely innovative and original way. 5G technology applied to robots will also make it possible to test humanoids with assistance and security functions in museums. Work is also under way on live broadcasting of events, including experimentation with the ‘travelling orchestra’, a concert performed by musicians in different parts of the city.
